چکیده
To ESTABLISH effective bilingual glossaries for mechanical translation will require some sort of solution for three problems: how to predict the words that will occur in the foreignlanguage contexts to be translated: how to predict the English meaning of the words in those contexts; and how to reduce to a minimum the searching time required to locate any item in the glossary. Let us recognize at the outset that these problems have by no means been solved for translation in general. Anyone who has worked at translating, say, from German into English knows that the standard desk dictionaries have at best a limited effectiveness ; that they do not list, for instance, any but the commonest technical terms; and that they seldom explore the semantic range of the forms they list. The larger encyclopedic dictionaries provide richer fare, but make it harder to digest. The number of forms listed is increased, but the searching time is thereby also increased to such a degree that efficiency is markedly reduced. Moreover, even the most encyclopedic of the encyclopedic dictionaries are inadequate guides to any sort of highly technical discourse. Finally, not even the so-called scientific dictionaries, which are devised specifically for the translation of technical material, provide anything like an exhaustive listing of technical terms; and they assume the availability of general dictionaries for. non-technical terms. Thus the well-equipped translator of technical contexts must ideally be provided with both a scientific

An Analysis of Social Presence and Cognitive Presence in Discussion Forum
An increase of asynchronous online discussions in website provides much opportunity for L2 learners from different global communities to be exposed to the target language at their own pace and time. However, no research looking at the essentials of social presence and cognitive presence in creating a supportive learning environment in such a context has been done. This study investigated the pa...
متن کاملModeling and Executing Service Interactions using an Agent-oriented Modeling Language
Modern information systems are considered as collection of independent units called services that interact with each other through the exchange of messages. This paper focuses on interactions from a more centralized or global perspective (i.e. choreography), validates the underlying approach to model interactions, and discusses how choreographies can be executed with an established agent-orient...
متن کاملThe Impact of the Asynchronous Online Discussion Forum on the Iranian EFL Students’ Writing Ability and Attitudes
This paper focuses on the impact of an asynchronous online discussion forum on the development of students’ ability in and attitudes toward writing in English. To do this, 60 undergraduate students majoring in English were assigned to two experimental and control groups while receiving different types of feedback. Students in the experimental group were required to take part in an asynchronous ...
متن کاملInterrelationships between Language and Literature from Old English to the Modern Period
Literature is the aesthetic manifestation of language. It is ‘as old as human language and as new as tomorrow’s sunrise.’ This paper explores the interrelationships between language and literature from 600 AD to the present day. The grammar of present-day English is closely related to that of Old English with the same tense formation and word orders. The verse unit is a single line and its org...
متن کاملX Sign Language (xSL) Forum: Considering Deafness as a Language Rather Than an Impairment
In this paper, we describe a video based, text free, online forum called xSL Forum. The aim of this work is to provide a tool for signing deaf people, allowing them to communicate using sign language(s). In contrast to the widely used, real time, video chat system, xSL Forum does not require people to be present at the same moment, facing their webcam, in order to communicate. Beyond a digital ...
متن کاملProcess Agility and Software Usability
Software development today can seem like a strange game at times. At one end of the field, in scruffy jerseys of assorted color and stripe, are the unruly rabble representing the method-less chaos that all too often passes for programming in many organizations; at the other end we see the advancing phalanx of the heavyweight team, a bright letter U emblazoned on the chest of each hulking goliat...
